Limited Edition Photographs

Limited edition photographs are made to the exacting standards of our master printer onto Fujiflex Professional Crystal Archive paper, one of the highest quality archival photographic print materials in the world. Fujiflex is known for its exceptional brilliance, clarity and permanence. Laboratory testing by The Wilhelm Research Institute rates the print permanence at 40 years (longer than Ilfochrome). In correct conditions permanence may exceed 100 years.

Each photograph is a limited edition of 200 only (or 250 in a few specified cases), complete with certificate of authenticity. Photographs are titled, numbered and signed by David Evans within the border surrounding the image, ensuring they are authenticated on the front side but not within the image area.

Open Edition Photographs

Open edition photographs are produced with your choice of either;

  • Epson Premium Luster finish photo paper, a superb finish ensuring your photograph will provide years of unfaded enjoyment, or
  • Ilford High Gloss Media, a premium new-generation nanoporous paper. The polyester film base and high gloss surface ensures exceptional brilliance, clarity and permanence

All open edition images are signed by David Evans

All Limited and Open edition B&W photographs are produced using Epson Premium Luster photographic paper, as the best results for B&W images are obtained with this finish.

Photographs are wrapped in non-abrasive paper, securely packaged in a tough durable postage tube.

Framing

Due to freight issues, we do not offer framing.

Please ensure your print is handled by a framer with good experience in mounting and framing high gloss photographs. Ask your framer to use the highest grade acid free archival matting and moulding and the latest framing techniques. This includes ‘cold press’ mounting onto gatorfoam or preferably aluminium.

The Equipment

David uses high quality medium format cameras which allow him to shoot on 120 roll film and expose frames which are up to 12 times larger than the conventional 35mm size. This gives the photographs what David calls ‘high fidelity’, or greater depth and clarity. His favourite format is 6x17cm panoramic.

David does not use digital cameras for his limited edition works, preferring the feel and craft of using film which is arguably superior for this type of work. He uses the best colour film in the world, from Fuji, which has a very fine grain structure and high colour saturation, further enhancing the quality of the images. Black and white film stock is supplied by world imaging leaders Ilford and Agfa.

Truth in Photography

These days there is much discussion surrounding the excessive manipulation of photography in the digital age. Photography has its foundations in technology…cameras are not a natural phenomenon that grow on trees, after all.  As photography can be defined as, ‘the art of the manipulation of light’, the issue seems to exist not in the manipulation itself, but in the failure to disclose it to the viewer.  People don’t like to be tricked.

We are therefore committed to truth in photography; David Evans transparencies are scanned using high quality optical scanners, and adjustments made to printing levels, contrast and colour balance primarily using curves adjustment layers. B&W photographs are dodged and burned to control contrast and curves layers are also used. Filters used by David during exposure are neutral density grads to control contrast and occasionally a polarising filter. No colour filters are used. All David Evans images are single captures on film, not digital composites, and significant elements within the image are not added or removed.
