'Deep in the rock', Upper Antelope Canyon. Layers of folded and weathered Navajo sandstone illuminated by filtered afternoon sun in the Arizona desert.
In such a familiar and popular location as Antelope Canyon, my aim with this photograph is to portray a slightly more abstract perspective than standard postcard pictures of North America. To do this, I decided to mimic the layers of folded sandstone by simply composing my own 'layer' or slice of the canyon wall by selecting a relatively small section of strata in the panoramic format to focus my study.
This image took a deceptively long time to consider and create, my aim to evoke the same essence of feeling I experienced by running my hands along the grooves and furrows of the sandstone. Solid, cool, continuous, ancient and timeless. This photograph sooths my soul with that essence, and is one of my favourite images of America.
