Bio

David Evans by Liam West
David Evans is a Master of Photography who creates works of high fidelity, depth and substance.
He started photographing in the 90′s, on the watershed of the golden age of film and the shiny, glittering age of the pixel.
His philosophy of painting with light to create an image has left him with a yearning for the old school, and so he maintains a preference for film in both medium and large format. All of the images in this collection are created on film, unless otherwise stated.
This gentle craft appears at a glance to be an easy feat, and yet is so utterly difficult. Subjects cannot be manufactured, the light cannot be forced, and there are no pixels to be altered.
David calls this approach ‘slow photography’…the layering of a series of moments together to create an otherwise un-created and un-recognized image. His images frequently have an ethereal quality, a result of slow film and long shutter speeds ranging from seconds to hours. It is the layering of time onto film. Darkness is the canvas. Slowly and carefully the light is allowed to bleed onto the film…the light received by the camera rather than ‘shot’ or ‘captured’.
Selectively moving with the times however, David has chosen advanced technology for the reproduction of these high fidelity film recordings, producing printed archival works of art that are a stunningly successful marriage between the elegance of film, and the progressive age of digital.
Moving into the realm of image creation from image capture is the fine art of the great landscape photographers in history. Evans has created an important body of collectable photographic work, and truly earned his reputation as one of the world’s finest lensmen in the landscape genre.
David’s motivation is to remind us that fun and wild, untamed places are critical elixirs in life…and through nature, art and observation, we find clarity.
